Janaza (2024)

Goat hide, Rose water, Theremin, Laser-etched paper, Mushrooms, Soil, Sand

Janaza (funeral in Arabic) is an interactive sound installation that includes two sets of goat hides from last year's Eid. One hide contains rose water while the other contains living and dying mushrooms in soil and sand.

A theremin is set on a frequency that best resembles the air raid sirens the artist grew up with. The audience is invited to interact with the theremin, to alter, glitch, or silence it for however long they can stay with that portion of the work as they smell the rose water placed in the hide.

Set to the side is a scroll of transfer paper laser etched with a conversation the artist had with Chat-GPT. Access the conversation here.
